Norwegens Satanisten-Hölle…
Probably no other music genre encounters as many prejudices as metal. Okay, I believe and hope that such things are now a thing of the past. But at least in the past, there were definitely some strong prejudices against metal fans, especially from older people. The music is just pure screaming. Metalheads are all satirists who spend their free time becoming sharks, burning down churches, and doing who knows what else . That’s obviously not true.
Public perception has also changed significantly in the meantime. Some studies now even suggest that people perceive metalheads as particularly friendly and warm-hearted . But old prejudices have their place, too. Certainly not only, but perhaps especially in the case we are discussing today.
Because what begins here with a tragic fate and a destructive environment will lead to a myth that fills entire podcasts, books, and films. It’s about the search for extremes, about a series of arson attacks that kept all of Norway on edge in the early 1990s, and about an unprecedented murder that still occupies an entire scene today.

From a house in Crocstad, Norway, comes a sound that most people would probably describe as a loud noise. For some time now, you have been rehearsing a band that will achieve legendary status just a few years later .
The band is called Mayhem and at that time consisted of four members. If you do n’t already know, you probably have an idea what kind of music Mayhem makes. Black Metal, and thus they are among the first and significantly shape the genre . Like so many bands in the heavier metal genres, they were significantly inspired by the band Venom .
They got their name from the song Mayhem with Mercy . The group was founded by, among others, guitarist äustern Aset, calledimus, and his buddy, bassist Jörn Stibery, called Necrobatcher. The rest of the cast changed frequently in the early years . Drummer Hellhemmer joined the band in 1988. But they’re still missing a singer. Peter Olin, known to his friends as Pelle , personally followed Mayhem back then.
The metal scene in Scandinavia was well networked at that time through fan magazines and mail order. And when Pelle heard that Mayem was looking for a new singer, he didn’t hesitate and sent a package to the band . The contents: a dead mouse on a small wooden cross, a demo tape with a few singing samples, and a handwritten letter. This macabre idea convinced the other band members.
Pelle travelled from his native Sweden to Norway. The band initially wanted to invite him to a rehearsal , but Pelle showed up with luggage and announced that he would be staying. And that’s exactly what happened. Pelle did indeed become the new singer of Mayhem. The band was complete again.
Since 1990, the four members of the band have lived more or less together in the house in Crocstad. It belongs to the von Necrobatcher family, but as an old farmhouse it stands empty. The perfect conditions for a few guys who want to make loud music. In the secluded house, they can rehearse without disturbing anyone and make plans for their next performances.
They’re really something else . Singer Pelle, who performs on stage under the name Dead, is particularly notorious for his outrageous performances. During a mowing tour, he once picked up a dead crow from the road. From then on, he carried them around in a plastic bag and inhaled the smell before the shows to get himself in the right mood.
At his concerts, he wears corpse paint and clothes that he has buried in the forest for days beforehand so that they smell appropriately bad. Furthermore, during some shows, Pelle inflicts cuts on himself until the audience is splashed with his own blood . On Piln, to the side of the stage, are impaled heads of pigs or sheep .
As tasteless as it may sound , a Mayhem concert was probably the most outrageous show you could see for your money back then, if you were willing to put up with that sort of thing . The text reads: “This much should be obvious, but Pelle’s personality is quite fractured. We can only speculate about how his fellow musicians and fans perceived him back then.
Perhaps they simply thought that Pelle, aka Dead, was just a notch above everyone else, that he’d do anything to shock and reinforce Mayhem’s mythic image . However, Pelle isn’t just a self-destructive person on stage, but also behind closed doors. He’s the only non-Norwegian in the band . He moved from his native Sweden to Norway specifically to be part of Mayhem.
While the other guys at least have some familiar places and a supportive environment, Pelle has no firm footing in Norway . This doesn’t mesh well with the fact that Pelle believes he’s dead. Yes, you heard right. In many accounts of this case, this factor is mentioned only briefly. But it ‘s actually a real condition.
It’s called Qotary.” Syndrome. In this condition, the affected person is convinced they are dead or don’t even exist. This also fits with the fact that Pelle had a traumatic near-death experience as a child, during which he was even clinically dead for a few minutes. There are conflicting accounts of this near-death experience.
Pelle himself is said to have told the other Meerhem boys that he had fallen through the ice while skating on a lake and almost drowned. Years later, however, his brother tells a different, even sadder story in an interview. Pelle was apparently beaten up by classmates who bullied him, so severely that his spleen ruptured and he suffered severe internal bleeding. The then ten-year-old almost died from it.
Det var det var ju så att han blev trakasserad av ett gäng och eh fick spö, rådunk mer eller mindre [Music] hjälslagen. Han hade nog väldigt svag puls eller ingen pulse everything. There is also something in the stomach and in the stomach.
This could explain Palace’s fascination with death and perhaps a possible Kota syndrome. Kota syndrome usually occurs in mental illnesses such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
But it can also occur in other neurological or Mental illnesses can occur, such as severe depression or derealization, the feeling that the world somehow seems unreal or alien . Whether Helloin suffered from any of these illnesses, we do n’t know. However, it seems plausible when you consider what happens next, because in 1991 something happens that will change the course of events for Mayhem and the entire black metal scene, and is perhaps, in a way, the starting point for the crime we are discussing today.
When Mayhem guitarist Jeronimus arrives home on April 8, 1991, his bandmate Pelle is dead. He finds Palace’s body in one of the upstairs rooms of the band’s house. A short suicide note lies with him. In it, he apologizes for all the blood. He also writes, ” No one will understand the reason for this anyway, to even begin to offer an explanation.
I am not human. This is all just a dream, and I will wake up soon.” Clearly, Pelle has taken his own life. Finding one’s own friend like this is simply unimaginable. Even more unimaginable. Jeronimus’s reaction, however, was quite different. Before calling the police, he went out again, bought a disposable camera, and then, back home, took photos of Palace’s body.
Later, one of these photos would end up on the cover of an unofficially released Mayhem album. Some people believe that Jeronimus photographed Palace’s body for precisely this reason, simply because he thought the image would make a good album cover. Others see no deeper meaning in this transaction and simply consider Jeronimus a bit daft.
His parents and former teachers would disagree. They all say that Jeronimus was always a shy, warm-hearted boy. Until he was 15, he was even a member of the church. He left as a teenager, but still. However, his parents and former teachers were pretty much alone in their views. Bandmate Necro Batcher later recalled the time after Palace’s death: ” While I was trying to process it all, Jeronimus told me that he had taken photos of his body . It really got to me.
” I made him angry. I told him I’d beat you up. I’d kill you . Burn the photos before you ever speak to me again. We had very different reactions to what happened. He seemed almost happy about it, while I was completely devastated. I cried for years. Necrobatcher is so against Attyde that he’s leaving.
Even before Pelle’s death, there were supposedly a few clashes between Pelle and Jeronimus . Once, Jeronimus allegedly shot someone with a rifle , and another time, Pelle supposedly tried to rob Jeronimus. But above all, Jeronimus is said to have repeatedly told the obviously severely mentally ill Pelle that he should just kill himself .
Whether that’s really true, we do n’t know. Only those who were there can know. However, Pelle used a firearm that belonged to him for his suicide. He doesn’t seem to feel any guilt, though . Necrobatcher is out for now and is pursuing other musical projects. So there are still… Guitarist Jeronimus and drummer Hellhammer are in the band.
While Necrobatcher claims to be grieving , Jeronymus seems to see potential in Pelle’s death— potential to further expand the Mayhem mythos. He allegedly collects some skull fragments and brain matter from Pelle at the crime scene before calling the police. He then crafts necklaces from these fragments, which he sends to another musician in the scene .
And Jeronimus has another distraction in the spring of 1991. He opens his own record store, Helvette, in downtown Oslo. He also establishes his own small label. The shop functions primarily as a meeting place for select musicians from the black and death metal scene. Admittedly, the store isn’t profitable because the selection is very small and niche. But that’s not really what Hellbetter is about.
The store becomes a breeding ground for the Norwegian black metal scene, where bands can network and exchange ideas, provided Jeronymus allows them into his inner circle. The select group is known as the Black Circle. Hieronymus enjoys creating a veritable cult around Helvette and the Black Circle . Quite literally. He fuels the image that militant types are constantly coming and going in the Black Circle .
Whether all of this is true, or whether it’s simply a matter of people who enjoy heavy music and are interested in Satanism, we can only speculate. Hieronymus is not only fascinated by Satanism, but also by Communism. Among posters and records of various scene luminaries, for example, is a portrait of Erich Honikam Laden.
At times, Hieronymus was also a member of a Marxist-Leninist youth organization. This aspect, however, is of less interest to most members of the Black Circle . It’s primarily about the music, the scene, and being controversial. Many of the pioneers of Black Metal get their start in the Hellwzene , including people who commit serious crimes in the coming months and don’t even shy away from murder .
One of the people who frequents the place most often is a young man. A man named Wag Wickernis. He also has a band, a one-man project called Burzung. Wag is five years younger than Jeronymus, but the older man seems to see something in him . Wag is different from the other guys who usually hang out at Helwit. Wag doesn’t drink alcohol.
He prefers milk on social evenings. He forgoes bandmates and makes his music alone. As a child, he lived in Baghdad for a year because his father worked for Saddam Hussein. However, this didn’t make Wag a cosmopolitan person. On the contrary, even back then he disregarded everything and everyone who wasn’t white or, in his opinion, European.
Wag also has a negative view of religion . His real name is Christian, but because he can’t relate to this Christian name, he officially changes it to Wag, the Norwegian word for wolf. In the scene, he goes by the nickname Count Grischnack, after an orc from Lord of the Rings. He is undoubtedly an extreme character, and Jeronymus initially finds that intriguing.
(Since Mayhem left…) When Necrobudger urgently needed a new bassist, Juronymus offered Wag the position. In return, Juronymus would help release Wag’s music, Burzum, on his label . Wag agreed and became Mayhem’s newest member . Hungarian musician Atila Shiha was hired for vocals, and work began on a new album.
From this point on, Mayhem’s rise to the top of the metal scene could have continued unhindered. However, there were a few burning churches, a murder in a park, and a conflict that would lead to another band member’s death . On June 6, 1992, the Fortuna Stave Church in Bergen went up in flames. The more than 600-year-old historical building burned to the ground.
A year later, a photo of the charred ruins became the album cover for a Burzum release. A lighter was included as merchandise. Although Wag was not convicted of arson at Fortuna Church , the circumstantial evidence was quite clear, and Fortuna was not the intended target. The only church to burn down in the early 90s .
On August 22nd, Wag and Juronymus, along with their friend Bart Itun from the band Emperor, set fire to the Holmenkollen Chapel in Oslo. Bart also came from the Hellwitze record store scene and is still an active metal drummer today. While the three young men were setting the fire in the old chapel, Bart told them that he had committed a murder the day before .
Bart had been visiting his parents in Lillahammer and was out that evening . After being flirted with by a gay man , Bart lured him into a dark park under the pretense of interest. There, he stabbed the man, named Magne Andreassen, more than 30 times with a pocketknife . Bart Itun got away with the murder for the time being.
It didn’t occur to either Anonymous or Wag to tell the police that their friend Bart was responsible for the murder . Instead, the three watched as the Holmenkollen Chapel was completely gutted. Despite the murder, life went on as usual. They would gather in the Hellwitte’s cellar, discussing music, and occasionally setting churches on fire.
But Wag seems to have been somehow impressed by Bart’s account of the murder , because less than a month later, in July 1992, it wasn’t a church that burned, but a house. Specifically, the house of Christopher Johnson, the singer of the band Thean. His house was set ablaze by a young woman named Maria, who also came from the Black Circle.
Presumably, she was acting on someone else’s orders . This is at least implied by a letter she left at the scene . In it, she wrote that the Count had been there and would return, and that the Count, or rather Count Gerischnak, was the pseudonym of Wag Wilkernis. Miraculously, no one was injured in the fire, but things could definitely have turned out differently if Christopher Johnson had n’t managed to escape in time.
Shortly after the attack, he received a letter from Wag himself. It read: “Hello, you victim, this is Count Grischnack von Burzo.” I’ve just returned from a trip to Sweden and I think I’ve lost a match and a signed Burzum LP. Haha, maybe I’ll make a return trip soon and maybe this time you won’t wake up in the middle of the night.
Wag cannot initially be held accountable for either this arson attack or the church fires . The police have leads pointing into the scene, but cannot prove anything. It only became concrete when Wag Wickernis became overconfident in January 1993 and gave an anonymous interview to a Norwegian newspaper . In the interview, Wag explicitly states that the Black Metal scene is behind the wave of eight church burnings in Norway , which has been occurring since 1992.
The goal is to spread fear and terror . They have essentially declared war against Christianity and Norwegian society. This anonymous interview is taking place in Wag’s apartment. He covered the windows with dark curtains , dressed himself in costumes beyond recognition, and placed all sorts of Nazi memorabilia everywhere .
The images immediately hit the Norwegian press and led to Wag’s arrest the next day. When Wag Wicken is arrested after the arson attack in Bergen, he has a justification ready. They just want to promote their music . Haris klagt att få PR här. Det var kun PR på plat. Yes, of course. Det har vi klart ganska bra. Do you think you’re going to give it to you? Yes, that’s for you . That’s for you.

Jag hade ju förväntat ett avhör och v kunne förklara att det var bra blast musiken. The blev lvarlig då tydligvis. For Politi, the whole thing is getting a bit too hot for euronymous. He had previously flirted with the idea. At Hellwer, hardcore fans would meet, and the shop was the meeting place of a black metal circle.
Now that more and more journalists are standing at his door, he is backtracking . At the beginning of 1993, he even closed the Heilw. Ingenting um losmst. Nej, men vi har ikke spurt vad det galler. Jo, we do n’t like the fact that the store is closing at all. For him and many other metalheads, Hellwitze was the center of their lives, and Wag feels betrayed.
Probably also because Juronymus and the shop were part of his defense strategy. At the beginning of 1993, he was held in pretrial detention for about 6 weeks . During this time, he claimed that he had orchestrated the anonymous interview with the newspaper together with Anonymous, in order to advertise his own music and his shop. He had already exaggerated and talked a lot of nonsense during the interview, but the journalists had added even more untruths for the finished article .
The whole thing is totally exaggerated and none of it is true. The fact that Juronymus doesn’t bask in the attention he receives from the interview, but instead prefers to shut down the business, naturally undermines Wag’s statement and makes him quite angry, even when he is released from prison in March 1993 due to a lack of solid evidence .
To make matters worse, Wag believes that Juronymus owes him money. Ronimus gave a four-figure sum to take care of the production and release of the first Burzum album . Eronus assured him that he would get his money back if the album sold profitably . However, according to his own account, Wag never saw any of his money again.
Instead, Habeus used the money to continue financing his shop . Or as Wag himself wrote, all he did was sit on his fat ass in his shop, drink Coca-Cola and eat kebab. While the conflict between Euronymous and Wag simmers, the series of fires in Scandinavia continues. By 1996, there will be more than 50 church fires in Norway.
Whenever a perpetrator is convicted, it is always a Black Metal fan who wants to emulate his idols or a musician from the scene who is in cahoots with WAG . An accomplice later explained the whole thing in an interview: “Our motive for setting fire to Assane Church was that Norway had always been so moral. Christian moral.
Rules and regulations were always Christian. The more you think like a Christian, the more you have it. You know that Norway shouldn’t be Christian, and that’s the reason for burning Assane Church. The reason is symbolic. Even before this series of fires ends, something else will happen, something that overshadows every church fire .
A murder among supposed friends. In the early morning of August 10, 1993, Wag Wickernis and his buddy Snorre, nicknamed Blackthorn, got into a car. The two drove together from Bergen, where Wag was living at the time, to Toyengata in Oslo, where Jeronimus lived on the fourth floor. While Blackthorn waited by the car, Wag went upstairs and rang Jeronimus’s doorbell around 3 a.m.
What happened in the next few minutes is unclear. All that’s certain is that Jeronimus died that night. ” A neighbor found him around 5 a.m. in the stairwell on the first floor with 23 stab wounds. Wag had injured him with a knife in the head, neck, and back and simply left him there.
After visiting Juronymus, W himself drove back to Bergen with Blackthon. On the way, they disposed of Wag’s blood-stained clothing in a lake . Initially, the press speculated that Euronimus might have been murdered by members of the Swedish black metal scene . The guys around the Helvetteladen had clashed with them a few times in the past .
This was the headline in Norwegian and Swedish newspapers. They claimed that anonymous was hunting down Swedes in connection with the murder . Incidentally, Necrobatcher later said he almost expected the police to arrest him for Euronimus’s death, as he had also planned to kill Juronymus. Of course, we don’t know how serious he was about this, but he said it in a 2019 interview without flinching.
Ultimately, however, the perpetrator was neither Necrobatcher nor anyone else. Another Swedish metalhead. It’s Wag Wickernis. On August 19, nine days after the murder, he is arrested in his hometown of Bergen.
In addition to murder, Wag Wickernis is also convicted of illegal possession of weapons. Around 150 kg of explosives are found in his apartment.
He is also found guilty of arson at several churches. He confesses to this arson even before The court never heard the murder of Hieronymus. Nevertheless, he received the maximum sentence of 21 years. His friend Blackthorn was sentenced to 8 years for aiding and abetting the murder. A third man, who had nothing to do with the scene, was also allegedly involved .
The prosecution believes that Wag, Blackthorn, and the unnamed man planned the murder together on August 10, 1993. While Wickernis and Blackthorn went to Oslo, their friend stayed in Bergen. He was supposed to provide the alibi and make it appear as if the three of them had been together in Wag’s apartment that evening.
The friend rented a film from a video store, withdrew money using Wag’s bank card, and made sure that the lights were on in Wag’s apartment so everyone could see that someone was home. To this day, there are different versions of the motive . Initially, it was suspected that it was simply about money. Hieronymus was said to have owed Wag some royalties from the distribution of the Burzum record .
Wag himself claims he acted in self-defense. He says Jeronimus threatened him with a stun gun, intending to torture and kill him. He claims to have heard this from several friends . However, this alone wouldn’t constitute self-defense, but simply means that Wag preempted Jeronimus’s murder. Furthermore, most of Jeronimus’s stab wounds were on Wag’s back.
Had Wag fought back while being attacked, the stab wounds would likely have been on the front of his body. During the struggle between Wag and Jeronimus, some glass broke, and Jeronimus fell onto it. Therefore, many of the wounds were n’t even layered wounds, but deep cuts from shards of glass.
Wag maintains that he didn’t drive to Jeronimus’s house with the intention of killing him. However, three knives, a baseball bat, a bayonet, and an axe were found in his car. With the extensive alibi planning, the self-defense claim is definitively invalidated. Others even speculate that Wag’s ideology may have led to Jeronimus’s murder .
Hieronymus is said to have had Sami ancestors. The Sami are an indigenous people whose habitat spans Norway, Finland, and Sweden. Because of this heritage, some believe Wag didn’t consider Jeronimus a fully-fledged Norwegian. Furthermore, a few weeks before the murder, he allegedly spread the rumor that Jeronimus was homosexual. This, too, would contradict Wag’s distorted worldview.
Whatever the motive may have been , Black Thunder, who was with Wag on the night of the murder , confirms that the act was premeditated. He says Wag fully intended to murder Jeronimus that night and insisted that Blackthor accompany him. Blackthor himself was mentally unstable at the time . He was supposed to be in a psychiatric hospital, but he had escaped and was staying with Wag in Bergen instead .
Wag’s intention to kill Jeronimus did n’t particularly bother him. He simply didn’t give a damn about Hieronimus. Wag disputes this as well, claiming… Blackthon simply came along because he really wanted to meet Jeronimus . Why he waited down by the car instead of going straight up with Wag remains unclear. In 2009, Wag Wickenis was released on parole.
He had previously escaped from prison in 2003. He failed to return from a day release and was later apprehended armed near Oslo. Even after his release, things didn’t quiet down for him. He married a woman 15 years his junior, moved to France, and became the father of what is now seven children. This hasn’t stopped him from repeatedly attracting negative attention.
In 2013, Wag was arrested in his adopted home of France on suspicion of terrorism. According to the French Ministry of the Interior, Wag and his wife may have been planning a large-scale attack. However, the suspicion was disproven, and Wag only had to answer to charges of incitement to hatred, as he regularly made numerous racist comments .
His online posts were filled with xenophobia, antisemitism, and Islamophobia. He was particularly active on YouTube, but the The platform itself deleted its account in 2019. He still makes music, which, for obvious reasons, shouldn’t be discussed further here . In summary , Wagwicken is a hardcore neo-Nazi and likes to flaunt it publicly whenever a platform presents itself.
Bart Itun, the drummer from Emperor and a friend of Wag and Juronymus, was also arrested following Wag’s arrest and convicted of the murder of Magner Andreassen in Lillehammer in 1992. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison but was released in 2003 after serving 9 years. He is still active as a drummer today .
The Necrobatcher is still active and performs again with Mayhem, albeit with new band members. The current guitarist once commented on an interview in which the Necrobatcher talks about Moduronus, with a certain violin humor: “I’m shocked to still be alive in this band .” The band continues to release music and play concerts and f
estivals like… Wacken Open. And M. Anonymous himself has become a pop-cultural phenomenon. There are entire podcast books about him, and in 2018 a film called Lords of Chaos, based on the book of the same name, was released. The film is quite graphic. According to a Guardian article, an ambulance even had to be called to the London premiere because a woman in the cinema fainted.
Another guest vomited . Jurony’s photos of Palace, which he casually printed out and sent to other people , have survived to this day . One of the photos even ended up on a bootl, an unofficially released album cover, in 1995. The old record store Helvit has been reopened in the same location by a new owner . It’s now called Nese Blood Records and has also become a kind of unofficial museum.
You can still buy metal records there, but tourists from all over the world come primarily to take a look in the famous basement. It was there that Anonymous and his eventual murderer used to sit together for nights on end, making plans for their bands. forged. Unfortunately, a fire broke out in the shop’s basement in the spring of 2024, destroying a large part of the place.
But the myth surrounding the case lives on. And that brings us to the end of today’s video. This isn’t actually the first murder from the middle scene that we’ve discussed here at Insolito. If you’re interested, feel free to check out the video about Debck Daryl’s death here on the channel.
