A chilling message from the past, destined to speak at the very moment she herself could no longer make a sound. Tova Moberg was born on March 31st. Born in 1998. Little is known about her early years. It is certain that she lived with her family in a small town called Hudiksvall in Sweden, with about 15,000 inhabitants.
Relatives and friends described Tova as an active, cheerful girl. Her life was going well. She found fulfillment in sports and planned to dedicate her life to that field. In 2014, Tova met a young man named Billy Fagerström. He was three years older than her. The two quickly grew closer. It was obvious that the two were deeply in love with each other.
Billy was caring and attentive, a positive person . Tova’s parents also liked him quickly . However, the two did not manage to meet often, as he lived outside the town. When he met Tova, Billy was already an adult and drove a car. Unfortunately, the car was exactly what led to a big problem that the young man got into towards the end of 2014.
He had been dating Tova for several months when the police caught him driving under the influence of alcohol. The young man had committed several offenses. After a brief court proceeding, he lost his driver’s license. This was a heavy blow for him, as meetings with the girl became rarer because it became more difficult for both to reach each other.
Even worse than the loss of his driver’s license was the revocation of his professional license as a taxi driver. That had been his primary source of income. After losing his job, Billy ended up in a difficult situation. During this time, he grew closer to a group of friends. Together with several young men, he lived in a farmhouse he had inherited after his father’s death.
Several young people lived there together, which made it possible to share the costs. In addition, they willingly helped him around the house. This also partially solved Billy’s transport problem, as his friends were happy to take him into town. The house was located in a secluded, wooded area near a lake. To get there, you needed a car.
All of Billy’s friends owned vehicles. He himself increasingly relied on his bike , which was no problem for him as an athletic person. Unfortunately, this situation did not remain without consequences for his accustomed lifestyle. Because of the transport difficulties, he met Tova less often, and that began to weigh heavily on him.
Billy suffered greatly from the loss of his driver’s license. Without support, he fell into a deep depression, also because of his financial problems. To cope with it somehow, he began to increasingly abuse substances. The whole group frequently consumed cannabis, and they also let the homeowner participate.
Later, he switched to stronger substances and quickly realized that dealing illegal items was an easy way to make money and compensate for the loss of his main income. Although the young man slipped deeper and deeper into this world of deception and intoxication, Tova continued to support her boyfriend. She did this even though she herself always maintained everything good, kind, and a healthy lifestyle.
The girl took nothing; she strictly refused it. Instead, she constantly played sports. Even after graduating from high school, Tova remained part of the swim team, which allowed her to work as a coach. She looked after children. In her free time, the girl also worked as a caregiver for the elderly. Despite her heavy workload, she visited Billy every spare minute.
Sometimes his friends picked her up, sometimes her parents drove her there. The situation changed somewhat when his driver’s license was returned after almost a year and a half of revocation. Soon after, serious changes began to appear in the girl’s behavior. At first, Tova broke off almost all her social contacts, stopped going to sports training, gave up her job as a coach, and also ended her work with the elderly.
To all questions about the reasons for these changes, she simply remained silent. In March 2017, her mother found out why all this was happening. One evening, the woman came home from work earlier than usual. She knew her daughter wanted to drive out to the country to see Billy, but noticed the young man’s car in front of her own house.
The woman greeted him from a distance, without stepping any closer. But instead of answering, he pretended not to notice and drove off abruptly. Tova’s mother didn’t understand his behavior, but noticed he was alone in the car. The mother assumed her daughter must be home and wanted to ask her everything. As soon as the woman entered the house, she immediately called for her daughter.
But instead of answering, Tova ran into the bathroom in the dark and locked herself in. Her daughter’s behavior seemed even stranger. The mother tried to persuade her to come out and tell her what was going on. But the girl refused. When the mother finally managed to get through to her, she saw a large bruise on her daughter’s face.
There was no point in denying it anymore. Tova confessed that she had been attacked by Billy multiple times. After the woman had listened to her daughter, she concluded that Tova was in a dangerous situation. The mother wanted to help and suggested calling the police, filing a report, and holding the young man accountable so that this dangerous suitor would disappear once and for all.
But the girl categorically refused. She insisted on returning to her boyfriend, as things could end badly otherwise. She even claimed that it was her own fault. To her mother, that sounded very strange. The woman began to suspect that the relationship with the young man had never been as good as everyone had assumed.
The very next day, the mother spoke to Tova again and tried even more urgently to convince her to end the relationship with Billy. She explained to her daughter how dangerous it was and where it could lead. Tova listened to her mother but said nothing . A day later, the daughter confessed that she had been subjected to repeated assaults by her boyfriend.
After that, her parents strictly forbade her from continuing to have contact with the violent boyfriend. Subsequently, the mother finally succeeded in convincing her daughter to go to the police. The patrol officers arrived quickly. Tova was supposed to testify against Billy and sign documents, but in the end, she couldn’t bring herself to do it.
As Tova later confessed, it was because of her fear of him. Without her cooperation, the police left the young man alone. Ultimately, he did not have to face any consequences. Even worse, Tova could not end this connection immediately. The man who was manipulating her found out about the police report.
But instead of showing fear, he began to control the girl even more strongly and harshly. After a few more meetings, which she couldn’t avoid out of fear, Tova came home with another bruise. Her mother forbade her from having any further contact with the violent man. Tova agreed. She began to cultivate closer contact with her friends again.
The girl visited them often and her relationships with her old school friends were rekindled. Friends called her, even young men she had known since childhood and whom her strict boyfriend had forbidden her from seeing. Tova distanced herself more and more from Billy. It seemed as if her life was finally taking a turn for the better. On the 13th.
Of May 2017, the girl set off for another party. Her mother drove her in her own car to a friend’s house. She wanted to make sure Billy wasn’t there. Indeed, he was not present. The woman dropped Tova off late in the evening, said goodbye, and had intended to wait for her return. But the woman was very exhausted that evening and simply fell asleep.
When she woke up in the morning, the first thing she wanted to do was speak to Tova, but she couldn’t find her at home . The young woman’s father was also worried. He knew about Billy and the problems their family had been facing. The parents first began to call the friends from the party where they had taken their daughter the previous night .
That’s how they learned that a young man had arrived late at night to pick Tova up by car, but it wasn’t her ex-boyfriend. Billy lived with him and the other members of the group in a farmhouse outside of town.
The parents tried to reach this young man, but they didn’t succeed immediately. It took several hours to find and obtain the phone number. All the while, Tova’s mobile phone remained silent. One of the friends mentioned that Tova had called her on the 14th. Of May around midnight. But no one was worried because the young woman had sounded calm.
She had explained that she was doing well. The friend wanted to go to sleep and simply turned off her phone. When she woke up, Tova was already being intensively searched for by her family. Soon they managed to reach the acquaintance of Billy who had picked her up from the party. The young man admitted that at his friend’s request, he had indeed driven to the party to pick Tova up and taken her to the farmhouse.
There, they had spoken calmly with each other for a while. He hadn’t noticed anything unusual about her behavior. Around 12:30 at night, Billy suddenly asked him to go for a walk for a while. Something like that had never happened before. He had no idea why that was necessary, but assumed the couple just wanted to be alone to talk undisturbed, and so he didn’t want to bother them.
According to the acquaintance, he left the farmhouse and did not know what happened after that. The parents realized that their daughter had broken off contact at the exact moment she was left alone with her aggressive ex-boyfriend. Now their worst fears had become reality, and both went to the police to report their daughter’s disappearance.
At the station, they were initially met with indifference. But after a database check showed a previous report of domestic violence against Billy, the situation was taken seriously. With the help of previously gathered information and contact with the missing young woman’s inner circle, they began to reconstruct the timeline of events.
The trail went cold exactly after that meeting with Billy. They also learned from friends that Tova had continued her relationship with her boyfriend even after her parents forbade it. While her mother and father believed it was all over, that was not the case at all. The police tried to meet with Billy himself to question him , but they were unsuccessful.
The young man was not at the house outside of town. His friends were there and spoke with the investigators. Everyone denied having anything to do with Tova’s disappearance, but provided no valuable information. The group told a similar story about calls from Billy, asking them not to come to the house. This went on for at least several hours.
Where the homeowner had disappeared to remained a mystery for the time being. Checking the mobile phones showed that Billy had been in contact with the whole group several times throughout the night. But everyone claimed they just wanted to know when they could come back.
He hadn’t told them anything alarming. Soon it was discovered that Billy had left the house after 3 o’clock in the morning. He had used a bicycle, which made it difficult to track his location. However, the suspect didn’t have many options for cycling routes. After searching the area for a few hours, he was found at his stepfather’s house.
Billy was immediately arrested and taken to the station for questioning. He did not deny his acquaintances’ story, but explained that he had nothing to do with the young woman’s disappearance. According to him, Tova drove off in an unknown direction after a short conversation with him. They had supposedly broken up for good and had no intention of resuming the relationship.
From the start, Billy acted notably cold, as if the young woman’s fate were completely indifferent to him. His behavior seemed suspicious, so the decision was made to take him into custody to ensure the main suspect could not flee. Meanwhile, investigators continued to speak with Tova’s friends. One of her close friends confirmed the family’s worst fears.
She knew that Tova had not succeeded in ending her relationship with the manipulative young man. That was due to his threats. Billy had told the young woman multiple times that she would die if she tried to break up with him. And he had threatened her with torture. Furthermore, the witness was convinced that there were some records where Tova might have documented proof of the violence against her.
Despite Billy’s denials and his refusal to cooperate with the police, the amount of frightening information continued to grow. The acquaintance who had helped bring Tova to the farmhouse at Billy’s request was interrogated again. Under pressure from the police, he became more talkative. In addition to the already known story, he said he wanted to return to the house about an hour after leaving because he did not want to stay out any longer.
However, when he called Billy, the latter demanded quite sharply that he should not come. The call took place at 2:20 a.m. On the phone, the young man noticed that Billy was heavily out of breath. He found it difficult to speak. In the following hours, the friend tried to reach him several times and received a firm rejection each time.
Billy never explained what it was about. It wasn’t until after 3 a.m. that he called himself and told the story about breaking up with Tova and the young woman running away. He demanded that the whole group repeat his words if the police were to show up. It all sounded strange. But since the friends wanted to go home to sleep, they agreed to everything.
Suspicion against the young man had meanwhile deepened so much that a search warrant for his house was issued. The farmhouse was thoroughly searched. Inside, suspicious traces were found, as well as stains that looked like blood, leading outside. The grounds around the house were examined in detail. The trail led toward a lake.
Besides the blood, they noticed strangely churned-up earth, as if something heavy had first been dragged through and then an attempt was made to cover the tracks. They ended right at the water’s edge. To investigate the bottom of the body of water, a team of divers arrived at the scene. Within an hour, they managed to discover a metal cart at the bottom with a suspiciously large bundle.

When this cart was pulled out, it was revealed that the young woman’s body was inside, wrapped in plastic film. Everything was wrapped in duct tape and secured to the cart. Its weight was intended to keep the body on the bottom. Furthermore, a hammer and some personal items belonging to the deceased were found in the lake, not far from the shore.
Examination of the tool revealed microscopic traces of blood on its surface. On the stepfather’s property, they found the remains of a freshly extinguished fire, in which articles of clothing had been burned. In total, several charred scraps of fabric were recovered as valuable evidence. They were soaked with the young woman’s blood.
The body was immediately taken to the lab for forensic examination. The official identification took place there first. This was not an easy task, as the deceased’s head was disfigured beyond recognition. With the help of dental records and a DNA test, the victim’s identity could be established. It was the missing Tova Moberg.
Clear signs of strangulation were visible on her neck, but the most horrific part was not this , but the state the perpetrator had left the victim’s face in while she was still alive. The young woman had suffered about 20 blows from a blunt object. Further investigations showed that the bloodstains found on the hammer came from the murdered young woman.
The tool found in the lake was the murder weapon. To collect further evidence in the farmhouse, investigators used luminol. When made visible with ultraviolet light, the true extent of the cruelty was revealed . Traces were even found on the ceiling . 19-year-old Tova died a cruel death in that farmhouse where Billy lived with his friends.
According to gathered information, the attack began as soon as his friend, at Billy’s request, had gone for a walk. That is exactly why he had not let anyone into the house. The young man attacked the young woman, carrying out numerous previous threats. He strangled her at first, but she did not die from suffocation.
While he pressed her head to the floor, he grabbed a hammer and struck her head several dozen times. Afterwards, he spent several hours carefully cleaning up the traces of the crime. Billy tried to destroy part of the evidence on his stepfather’s property. And before he left, he got his friends to tell the police a coordinated story.
Everything seemed like a premeditated, carefully planned murder that he tried to cover up. However, the decisive evidence against him was not the hammer. Mr. and Mrs. Moberg immediately began searching online for information that might contain evidence of threats and stalking by Billy. In Tova’s room, her parents first found her diary.
It contained numerous entries documenting how brutal the young man had been throughout their entire relationship. Besides the diary, they discovered a digital storage device, a USB stick, which contained many photos of bruises and injuries Tova had sustained from her boyfriend, as well as screenshots of their messages.
Judging by the timeline, Billy became increasingly aggressive, jealous, and manipulative after his driver’s license was revoked. This event had made him very angry and rattled him. The young man gradually fell into dependency on increasingly stronger substances. At the same time, he took his anger out on Tova, as he could no longer live a normal life, drive, or work.
He began to put her under mental pressure, later physical, and all of this happened in front of the friends who lived with him in the farmhouse. But unfortunately, none of them helped her and no one tried to put a stop to what was happening. Billy exerted complete control over Tova. At the slightest sign of defiance, he punished her in a cruel manner.
He repeatedly threatened her with death and torture should she ever try to leave him. Tova lived in constant fear for her life, but never lost hope of rescue. These facts were not only recorded in the diary but also evidenced by screenshots from her phone that Tova took during the threats in the last months of her life.
Because of her boyfriend, she was forced to cut off contact with her immediate circle, except for a few friends. Billy was strictly against Tova working as a trainer, even if she was only helping older people, provided they were men. Tova was trapped. She could not bring herself to defy her boyfriend for fear he might kill her, and therefore she gave in and obeyed him.
The incidents described in the diary seemed truly frightening. Billy frequently attacked her, hit her, and strangled her. If there was no reason, he would find one by taking issue with every little thing . To cope with this, Tova began using various tricks, such as pretending to lose consciousness from the beating or strangulation.
That was the only way she could get her attacker to loosen his grip and stop. Despite all her efforts, his jealousy and aggression grew ever stronger, and his behavior became increasingly uncontrollable. Even if just some young man on the street spoke to Tova, that was enough of a reason for Billy to inflict pain on her.
Once, when she was simply greeted by an old acquaintance from school, he dragged her into his farmhouse, waited until nightfall, and then threw her out the door in her pajamas. On that day, the temperature dropped to below 25 degrees of cold. The situation seemed hopeless, but when she could barely move from the cold, he let her back inside.
The most shocking sentence in Tova’s diary was right at the beginning. She had started keeping it explicitly as evidence in the event of her murder. Tova wrote: “If you are reading this diary, I am most likely no longer alive.” The young girl took a risk when she took screenshots of her boyfriend’s messages and saved them for safekeeping in a cloud and on a USB drive.
Dozens of such photos containing his threats were found there. Hundreds of people came to the funeral. Everyone was shaken by the cruelty of the murder and the circumstances of her death. The coffin was carried to the cemetery closed, as Tova’s face could no longer be restored. The young girl had hoped to get a college education and leave her hometown immediately.
In her notes, she repeatedly recorded how careful she had to be to escape Billy. Even feigning unconsciousness gave her hope. She looked for a chance of salvation in everything. Unfortunately, none of that helped her. Another painful circumstance was that Tova’s mother desperately wanted to help her daughter .
The woman genuinely tried to get through to her and get help from the police when she learned that he was laying hands on her. But unfortunately, the mother did not know the full extent of what was happening. Regrettably, Tova did not find the strength to oppose the attacker in any way. After the mother filed a report, the case was closed due to a lack of willingness to cooperate.
Although the evidence against the main suspect mounted, he continued to claim he had no idea what had happened to the girl. But the doubts about his statements were quickly confirmed. His story began to change. Tova’s close circle immediately turned against Billy. However, that did not apply to the young man’s friends. Under police pressure, only one of them noticed his friend’s strange behavior and told everything openly.
The others tried to mislead investigators by repeating the story Billy had invented. They claimed to have known nothing about the domestic violence against the victim. Billy stated that on that fateful night, besides the group of young men, there was another person in the house, a drug dealer. He claimed that Tova had left late at night with that very man when they had decided to break up.
He said he had not seen her alive after that. The young man was of the opinion that this dealer had killed the girl. However, investigations did not confirm this story. Only under police pressure did all the people in Billy’s inner circle confirm the inconsistencies in his behavior on that fateful night, as well as his brutal treatment of the girl and the fact that there were no drug dealers in the house .
Neither the main suspect’s behavior nor the reconstruction of events pointed to any remorse on his part. He even published posts on his social media profiles that coincided in time with the removal of traces from the crime scene. In them, he mocked his victim in a veiled way. Even when it became obvious that he was convicted, Billy did not make a confession.
He continued to claim that, in addition to Tova, a dealer of illegal substances had come to his house and that this person had taken her and killed her. However, checks showed that no foreign cell phones had appeared at the farmhouse that night. Only Billy and the friends who lived with him were present.
Tova later joined them, but after an hour her phone stopped working . Soon after, the trial began. The 22- year-old Billy was charged with intentional murder, attempted escape, destruction of evidence, and several other counts. Numerous witnesses appeared at the hearings. Yet not even the closest circle around Tova or Billy provided the most valuable insights.
The diary entries and the photos saved by the victim herself proved to be decisively helpful for the investigation and the trial. Billy’s lawyer had no hope of an acquittal for his client from the start. The evidence against him was irrefutable. The defense focused on reducing the sentence.
The prosecutor demanded the highest possible penalty, which in Sweden entails a life sentence. Under the same law, however, the minimum sentence the perpetrator had to serve before being eligible for early release was only 18 years. Billy never admitted to the murder or the other charges in court, despite all the compelling evidence found against him.
And there was plenty of that. The file contained burned clothing from which the young man could not wash out the bloodstains. His fingerprints were found on the blood-stained hammer used to commit the crime. The defense’s attempt failed. There were no arguments in favor of the young man.
No one came forward in his defense. The jury needed only a few hours to find Billy guilty on all counts. The young man was sentenced to life imprisonment. He continued to deny the murder, and an appeal was filed immediately after the verdict was announced. But after this stage of the proceedings, the verdict was upheld. Billy went to prison.
He spent two years behind bars. In 2019, he decided to give an interview for a documentary film for Swedish television. In the conversation with the journalists, the young man finally confessed that he had indeed killed his former girlfriend. He apologized, but even now, there was more coldness than remorse in his words and his gaze.
All of this was a weak comfort for Tova’s parents. They declared that they would fight to the very end to ensure the killer never walks free again. Tova’s dreams remained unfulfilled. She knew that he would come to take her. And she did everything in her power to ensure her tormentor would not escape punishment. Her diary became more than just evidence; it became the final cry of her soul, heard in court.
But behind this investigative story lies a bitter, shattering truth. Tova was completely alone in her personal hell and was afraid to tell anyone about it. Desperately, she recorded every blow, every threat, and methodically gathered evidence for the police. Yet she could never bring herself to ask those who loved her for help.
